Summer Camp with Mountains to Sound Greenway

Although my job is normally a mix of office work and field work, this summer I’m spending eight weeks in the great outdoors helping to lead week-long environmental stewardship projects for kids ages 10-18. Our locations vary from week to week, and are spread out across 30 miles in the Mountains to Sound Greenway. Our youth volunteers have gotten their hands dirty completing a variety of projects and have had the chance to use a large range of tools. So far kids have built stairs up a trail on Tiger Mountain in Issaquah, built and repaired a rock turnpike on Little Si in North Bend, and removed invasive holly, ivy, and blackberry in state parks and near local trails.

By the end of the summer, 100 different kids will have contributed nearly 3,600 hours of service to their local public lands. The goal of our summer programs is to help kids come away with a sense of accomplishment at the projects they have completed, and a new respect for the lands around them. It’s always great to have our youth volunteers come to camp and tell us they took their family and friends up a trail to see all the hard work they have done!

That looks like a fun camp out in the beautiful nature. Its a great idea to get your kids outside during the summer instead of being crammed inside watching TV and playing video games all summer. Sending them to a place where they will enjoy themselves as well as be outside among other children learning new things is one of the best ways to spend a summer.
